I’m talking about the murder of Charlie Kirk, if you’re wondering.
There is no shortage of murders happening every single day around the world, right? So, why am I reacting to this one? Heck, I’m not even from the US. So, why?
It’s because of those people celebrating his death, rejoicing online like if it was some happy event, some great news to have assassinated Charlie Kirk. People with whom, naively, I thought we shared some common ground and values. Their reaction made me realize how wrong I was.
I don’t know what is going on with those people but it is deeply worrying to witness anyone celebrating the assassination of a person that was sharing ideas and debating them publicly, even when one doesn’t agree with those ideas.
Because without the ability to exchange ideas freely and safely, without the freedom as well as the right to agree and to disagree with anyone, without having to fear for one’s own live, there is no real discussion possible, and no freedom. Because when one side decides they’re right and they’re entitled to the killing of anyone whose ideas they disagree with, it’s not democracy and justice they’re fighting for.
Killing people because of who they are, because of their ideas, beliefs and values is what dictators do.
My condolences and my thoughts to the family.
