Linux: A Much Quicker Way to Switch Between Sound Outputs

If you’re anything like me, you often switch between audio outputs. Depending what I do, I will either play audio through a pair of wired headphones, or my noise cancelling Bose or my Airpods, if not directly through the the speakers connected to the PC.

Changing audio output under Linux Mint is not complicated but it still is many clicks away and it obviously could be a lot less clicks if there was some kind of shortcut in the menu bar. Surely, someone must have thought the same. Someone more competent than I am that would have devised a solution.

And indeed someone has, and has devised a nifty little shortcut for the menu bar that’s called Indicator Sound Switcher. One click on its icon gives access to all available audio outputs. It’s exactly what I was looking for. Note that it can also list all input sources if you also need to switch that, since I only use one I deactivated that feature to reduce clutter in the little menu.

Installation is easy, there is PPA as well as binaries (deb & Arch) available. The PPA works great under the latest version of Mint, btw.
