Because of some stupid accident, I needed a new desk letter/paper organizer on my desk. Nothign fancy, just something to hold my index cards and a few fountain pens, pens and stuff.
Checking on Amazon, I was surprised to see their price. I mean they’re not that expensive but it’s just some molded plastic or bent wire, right? Then, I checked for used one on Ebay and elsewhere and I was even more surprised by the asked prices plus shipping.
At least here in France, it’s quite saddening to see how much money people are hoping to get out of even the cheapest plastic junk (I even found a broken one for sale) — often noticeably more money than what one would pay for a new one but that’s another issue. I mean, it’s sad because it’s indicative of how scarce money is getting. Which is never a good sign.
Long story short, I made my own out of recycled cardboard.
It’s not the prettiest but it fits my needs perfectly.
I spared the planet one more useless delivery — all things considered, probably from China as, before being stored in Amazon’s own nearby warehouse, a new paper organizer would most certainly have been made in and shipped from China.
And it cost me almost nothing:
- The hot glue and the electricity used to heat said hot glue: a few cents.
- Cardboard: free (I recycled some parcel I recently received)
- Thirty minutes of my time to both design this highly sophisticated contraption that required very hard thinking, and then cut and glue the cardboard parts.
Don’t waste your time asking for it, I will not create a GoFundMe so you can place preorders to get your very own Libb’s Eco-Friendly Desk Organizer. It’s a unique piece and already a vintage one. Undoubtedly will be worth a small fortune on Ebay.
