Regarding what the US president has to say about France

No, I’m not referring to the recent buzz regarding what the 47th President has to say about France (and about Europe, and about NATO, and about the world and, obviously, about himself). There is too much, firing in so many directions, to even try to keep track of his many deep thought(s).
More humbly, I’m referring to a previous and much more obscure US President, that once said:
Every man has two countries, his own and France.

The role of education in the making of a citizen, or why reading should matter more?

My last contribution, with less typos, in a discussion about the way people seem to use their hatred of one another to decide how to vote
If people are emotionally hurt, they abuse themself (throw themselves into work etc). What do you think would stop people from hurting/abusing others?
That, I could not tell. What I can tell is that education was supposed to help fight that by helping all of us (not just ’them’) learn to think more… adequately when faced with a problem.

Who's your 'I know he's pure evil but can't prove it' person?

My answer to this question.
No one. I don’t believe in ’evil’ persons or groups of people. Nor do I believe in ‘good’ persons, considered as the opposite of evil.
In other words: I don’t think “we” are the good guys and I certainly don’t think “they” (our supposed adversaries) are the bad ones.
That notion of evil (opposed to good or right) was, and still is to this day, too often abused to silent or even to murder people, individuals or entire groups of population, that some other person or group of persons hate or whose ideas/work/questions or even mere lifestyle they want to get rid of.

For years, I’ve been carrying a pocket notebook everywhere I go. I still do. But for the last couple weeks I’ve also ben using one of these:
It’s a digital audio recorder I use to record quick notes on the go.
More specifically, this one is the Sony ICD-PX312. It’s a lovely name for sure, but I simply cvall it Sonic.
The device dates back from around 2010 or maybe 2011.

Havel called this “living within a lie.” The system’s power comes not from its truth but from everyone’s willingness to perform as if it were true. And its fragility comes from the same source: when even one person stops performing — when the greengrocer removes his sign — the illusion begins to crack.
(…)
You cannot “live within the lie” of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination.

I don’t purchase Amazon ebooks anymore but I still own an old kindle Paperwhite that is working great (no matter how much I disagree with the way Amazon is destroying privacy and trying to redefine the notiion of ‘owning what one buys’, the Kindle itself was always nice to use). So, why not re-purpose it as an… epub reader, for the occasional ebook I may want to read from time to time in the future?

My contribution to this discussion What do you think the internet will be like in a few years? Why? There will one Internet for us and one for the powerful people. Theirs will be what they want it to be, while ours will be:
Without any right to privacy (no pseudonym like mine, no VPN, no email aliases and obviously no true cryptography or fully encrypted whatever service: they will legally own the keys and the know the ID of all of us), and with constant tracking of our every moves and words.

I won’t list any of those I read, but I can tell I read a few that are at the complete opposite of my own preferences and convictions, personal and political.
It helps me avoid believing I know anything for sure.

And cold.
It sure is getting chilly around here too, but good old France has experienced far worse weather, quite often. I wonder if people in the US also start feeling this very winter is coming for them too?
I don’t know about you, but when it starts getting cold and sad outside, to keep myself warm and happy there is little I prefer over a warm cup of tea or, once in a while, a glass of (a good French) wine, while I’m reading a (good French) book.

No idea where I could put that but I don’t want to see it sink into oblivion over there on Lemmy. So, here it is. It’s my reply to the question what surpises you the most about yourself?.
The part I wanted to keep is the ranting ‘bonus’ I added after my short reply. It’s all about reading and why young people themselves should not allow the adults around them—be it their teachers a their school or the whole educative system, or their parents—to deprive them of accessing what is probably the most powerful tool ever devised (I compared reading books to a cheat code in my comment and it is that, and much more).

Save that I discounted it a tad too much, as I keep my content fully free of charge.
Also, it’s not really a second post. It’s a second thought about that book I just mentioned. This time it’s not about its past experiences with other readers.
A week ago or so, I entered a used bookstore in some town I was stuck in for an hour.
To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting to find much as, from the outside, that store looked more like some militant headquarter than your usual bookshop, but it was real cold outside and it was a bookshop. I pushed the door open.
I said hi and looked around with a hungry smile.

I already mentioned using the iPad as a makeshift Internet radio (in French) but, as much as I decided to steer away from proprietary e-readers for their lack of privacy and for our lack of real ownership of the ebooks we ‘purchase’, the main reason I still use an iPad is that it’s an excellent PDF reader. If not the best.
I regularly read out-of-print editions, or simply real old books of many centuries ago, that would cost too much to own a physical copy of but that are legally available as PDF files.

I’m talking about the murder of Charlie Kirk, if you’re wondering.
There is no shortage of murders happening every single day around the world, right? So, why am I reacting to this one? Heck, I’m not even from the US. So, why?
It’s because of those people celebrating his death, rejoicing online like if it was some happy event, some great news to have assassinated Charlie Kirk. People with whom, naively, I thought we shared some common ground and values.

It’s surprising how the Web instantly becomes quieter and less crowded when you turn off JavaScript.
This is one of the experiments I’m doing right now, trying to reduce the amount of content I want to rea, to watch or to listen to. The experiment is quite simple to do: I turn off JavaScript by default and only turn it for a website if 1) that website doesn’t work without it and 2) I still really want to access its content.

Depending what I do, I will either play audio through a pair of wired headphones, or my noise cancelling Bose or my Airpods, if not directly through the the speakers connected to the PC.
Changing audio output under Linux Mint is not complicated but it still is many clicks away and it obviously could be a lot less clicks if there was some kind of shortcut in the menu bar.

Something that came as a complete surprise for me, but something I won’t try to resist either. It almost feels like if I was falling in love again with my native language again and I won’t deny it.
For now, I’ve been prefacing each French blog post title with a ‘FR:’ tag to make it clearer what to expect.

I have not purchased a single ebook from Amazon in well over a year. So, it’s not like I needed more motivation to stay away from them as a book seller but removing the ability to download your ebooks (and transfer them through USB) is a step further in denying book buyers—it means us—full ownership of the books they buy.
One the same topic:
Who Owns the Ebook I Purchase? They even have a couple shelves dedicated to books in English, which is great and not a given even here in Paris
Recently, I found these two illustrated Sherlock Holmes volumes. Each book is supposed to offer a facsimile of the original stories as they were published with their illustrations.

Or Why I switched back to printed books, part one.
I am a reader. Always have been.
If I love the printed book, I also like the convenience of its digital cousin, the ebook. So much that for the last fifteen (twenty?) years, more than half of what I have read were ebooks. Probably much more than that but you get the idea: I have no issue with reading ebooks.

This afternoon, I had one of my regular appointment with my eye doctor. You know, being over fifty one’s eyes are not what they used to be.
This was not my usual doctor. Replacinh her was another woman, much younger, somewhere in her early twenties. She was nice and competent, the checkup went as I expected. But once she tried to explain to me the state of my vision she seemed very hesitant.

One Less Lightbulb, in Two Steps

I turned off my desk lamp to save on electricty, while I am writing. That’s silly, I know. A lightbulb amounts to nothing. I know that too. And despite that, I did it.
I moved my sad desk1 closer to that window. Before the move, it was facing a wall in the same room and needed that lamp all the time. After moving it, I sat and get out my pen and paper, I did not turn on the lamp, and started writing.

Hi, I am Libb. That’s the surname I like to use online, you can call me David. I’m a 50-something 🇫🇷 🇪🇺 dude that tries to rethink his life around simpler and more sustainable values. I speak French but I try to write more in English, hopefully the content of the blog will reflect that wish.
On this blog,
You will never see ads.
Ads are everywhere and they have ruined most of the Web.

You can send me an email. Be warned that I tend to read and answer emails as quickly as I update this blog, which is not that quick.
I have given up on most social media but you can find me on Piefed, an open and libre alternative to Reddit without ads and without tracking. Last, I have recently revived my mastodon account, an open and libre alternative to Twitter, but the best way to reach me remains good old email.

Writing Most posts are drafted longhand. I Just prefer it that way. Writing longhand forces me to slow down and to think a little more about what I want to say and how. Alas, still not enough thinking is going on seeing how regularly I need to edit a post after I published it.
It may also take a while between the moment I draft a post, the moment I type it on the computer and the moment I finally publish it.
